Employees in the Oil and Gas industry can expect that their company make a significant investment towards the development of their employees.
From an individual perspective, however, the key factors are how you can access the support that your current employer provides and how the provision of development support may influence your choice of future employer.
The range of support items to look for may include:
- Company policy spelling out its commitment to development.
- Company development plan showing how the policy will be implemented.
- Company development budget, allocating funds for the investment in developing the workforce.
- Provision of a company system of training evaluation.
- Provision to agree "time off" work to undertake relevant self study sessions.
- Access to information on appropriate or approved training and development activities.
- Access to information on career or job opportunities, the criteria for advancement and how training and development can improve employment prospects.
- Access to a range of self teach materials, books, videos, CDs, distance learning programmes etc.
- Information from a system for managing the development activity and for measuring its effectiveness both for the company and for the individual.
- Information relating to the company's activity in development activities such as job rotation, development assignments and work shadowing.
- Provision of schemes aimed at enabling employees to meet required standards of relevant professional institutions.
- Provision of a scheme of mentorship, where employees can draw on the experience of someone appropriately qualified and experienced.
- Provision, from company resources, of an accurate training record showing all training and structural development undergone during company employment.
- Commitment to the National Standard for Training and Development, "Investors in People".
Whilst this appears to be an impressive list there may be other obvious commitments to developing people that are available. It is important to realise that not all of these support systems will be available in any one company. Each company will have its own priorities. Equally, individuals must be prepared to put their own case forward when requesting company assistance and be prepared to reach a working agreement on what will be provided by the employer and what the employee will provide in return. The main responsibility is, however, with the employee to go and find out what is available and to use that support constructively.
