Maersk Oil – the natural upstream oil and gas partner; navigating complexity, unlocking potential
Founded in 1962, Maersk Oil is a top twenty independent oil and gas company, and part of the international A. P. Moller-Maersk Group. With an operated production of about 625,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, Maersk Oil produces oil and gas from Denmark, Qatar, the UK, Kazakhstan, Brazil and Algeria. Exploration activities are ongoing in producing countries as well as Angola, Norway, the US Gulf of Mexico and Greenland.
Turning marginal and challenging fields into commercial successes has been the cornerstone of Maersk Oil’s business since 1962. Maersk Oil focuses on pioneering technologies and harnessing talent to continue to operate safely and successfully, creating value for partners and host governments.
Incident- Free
Our goal is an Incident- Free Maersk Oil. We know that a strong safety performance validates our license to operate, and helps us protect our people, the environment and our assets.
Maersk Oil UK
Maersk Oil firmly established itself in the UK in 2005 after the acquisition of Kerr McGee's UK assets for $2.95 billion. With headquarters in Aberdeen, Scotland, Maersk Oil has grown rapidly to operate seven fields, holds 50 exploration licenses and employs over 800 people. The purchase of Kerr McGee's assets included offshore installations that produce from the Gryphon, Maclure and Tullich fields (Gryphon FPSO) and from the Janice, Affleck and James fields (Janice FPU).
Maersk Oil in the UK has an ambitious growth plan of increasing production from 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day to some 100,000 barrels within 5-7 years. The company plans to invest over $1 billion p.a towards this target.
We have strong financial backing from the A.P. Moller Maersk Group, which allows us to pursue our vision for long term growth. Through successful exploration and business development we have a diverse range of projects that are due to come into production in the next few years. These include HPHT fields, and development planning for conventional fields, and optimising production from our existing assets.
In 2007, Maersk Oil began producing from Dumbarton, a previously abandoned field, and by 2012 had sold over 40 million barrels. The Gryphon and Janice fields were in production when Maersk Oil acquired Kerr McGee's UK assets. In 2008 Maersk Oil made the significant Culzean gas condensate discovery
Development and Exploration
Maersk Oil is currently developing a range of exciting projects, and is also investing $1 billion in the Nexen-operated Golden Eagle field with first production planned in late 2014.
Maersk Oil is notably strong in exploring the mature UK offshore area. In 2012 a number of exploration and appraisal wells are planned. Maersk Oil is also active in the annual UK Licensing Rounds and submitted a number of bids in the 27th round. The results of this round are due to be announced later in 2012.
The company has also gained significant expertise in High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT) operations
