Our Client is looking for a Minerals Processing Engineer. This is a contract position of one year plus duration, based in Calgary, Canada.Candidates must have experience in separating bitumen from the sand, and MUST be eligible to work in Canada. Job Function: The Mineral Processing Engineer oversees the technical development of the following systems: hydrotransport, extraction, extraction secondary recovery (i.e. flotation) and tailings transport. The Minerals Processing Engineer is responsible to ensure the final design for extraction is safe, cost effective, operable and meets the design intent. This includes managing the design progression to ensure the construction deliverables are adequate and follow through on the project through construction, commissioning, startup and initial operations to assist with ensuring the plant is properly operating and reliable. Responsibilities and duties: Integration of mining and extraction processes to optimize bitumen production and recovery in the most cost effective manner for the total operation. Provide overall process engineering technical leadership and expertise. Steward the progression of technical definition and system design by the contractor. Oversee the development and issue of key process deliverables for extraction, including heat and material balances, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment sizing, line sizing, operating procedures, control narratives and system descriptions. Participate in or support other groups such as construction, commissioning, startup teams and operations to troubleshoot and advise with the plant design intent and operation. Key areas of knowledge and expertise: Mineral processing, process engineering principles, theories, and concepts. Process simulators and heat and mass balance softwares. Understanding of the overall extraction processes, and relationships between minerals processing, mining and downstream processing. Understanding of ore characteristics such as grade, PSD, fines, D50, etc. and their impact on ore processability (performance in PSC, Flotation, pipelines, etc). Understanding of slurry behavior, hydrotransport and knowledgeable in slurry pumping systems. Able to size hydrotransport systems and advise on operating parameters. Understanding of the properties of oil sands and associated factors on processing such as interfacial properties, wettability, impacts of clays and water chemistry. How ore processability is affected by pH, viscosity, aeration, weathered ore, caustic and chemical additions. Sound judgment in the selection and application of equipment and systems for mineral processing, solids and slurry handling, process and process control hardware and software. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (preferably Mineral Processing or Chemical Engineering). Extensive experience in a mineral processing design or operations technical/advisor capacity, oil and gas processing experience is an asset. Strong communication, coordination, technical and problem solving skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software programs. Desired Qualifications: Experience in oil sands facilities. Substantial experience as a process engineer providing operations technical field support. Experience as a process engineer working on a major project.
